Honda blast onto the scene in Knysna — by Heinrich Kleyn

HONDA Marine Knysna were the hosts for the launch of the all new Honda BF50/BF40 four-stroke engines in August. With Honda fully committed to improving their current technology and coming up with innovative new ideas, these new motors came as no surprise.

Honda Marine has launched completely redesigned versions of the proven and highly popular BF40 and BF50 fuel-injected four-stroke outboard engines. Retaining their class-leading lightweight and compact styling, the new engines have been significantly enhanced. The most important changes include the fitment of electronic fuel injection technology, as well as Honda’s revolutionary Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) air/fuel ratio and ignition-timing technology.

This new BLAST technology will bring a new dimension to the word of four-stroke motors. These days everybody is trying to get the most reliable motor — and the most fuel-efficient — and Honda has taken a big step towards fulfilling that need.

Combined with the ECU controlled programmed fuel injection system, which optimises injection volume and ignition timing, the BLAST technology amplifies torque to ensure smooth and powerful propulsion throughout the speed range. The exciting initial acceleration made possible by BLAST opens up a new dimension of four-stroke outboard enjoyment. When tested on the water you can clearly feel the difference in power between the new engines and the previous models.

The economy-controlled, unique Honda PGM-F1 allows lean burn control technology to be automatically employed when cruising to greatly improve cruising fuel consumption over that of earlier models. In addition, this outboard motor is environmentally-friendly, surpassing the emissions regulations around the world.

The new BF50/BF40 slim, compact wing-form design has been inherited from the larger Honda outboards. This, combined with the adoption of a long-branch inlet manifold and the miniaturisation of electrical components, has allowed Honda to create the lightest and most compact outboards in this class.
